The Purifying Bath
Some bathe to get clean. Others do it to get warm. And some people are purely of the shower variety. But if you think bathing is only to get your skin clean, here’s an eye opener. A purifying bath goes way beyond a simple rinse and repeat. It happens to be an ideal wellness ritual for giving yourself regular self care.
When Pursoma Founder Shannon Vaughn created the lush line of bath soaks, it wasn’t merely for scent or feelings of soft skin. Ok, Pursoma soaks deliver on both of those AND so much more.
Here’s the scoop. After a scary health diagnosis and the onset of PTSD, Shannon put her studies in cleansing, Ayurvedic medicine, and Yogic philosophy to use. She wanted to offer the world the same benefits she had discovered in these wellness rituals, and formulated a line of beauty wellness products with the purest and most potent ingredients.
But it’s not only about the hand-selected, consciously produced ingredients. It’s about the delivery method and the experience, both during and after the bath.
True beauty and a feeling of whole body wellness is achievable both inside and outside the body through a lasting commitment to self care rituals. Use of Pursoma bath soaks encourages you to adopt a daily practice, attending to your wellbeing on mental, emotional, and physical levels by pressing pause on the hustle and bustle of daily life. A habit well worth your time.
Reasons a Purifying Bath Is One of the Best Wellness Rituals

Bathing with cleansing natural ingredients provides a wealth of benefits to skin, body, and mind:
- A feeling of purity and deep-down cleansing
- Feelings of lightness and wellness
- Softer, smoother feeling skin
- A sense of mental clarity and calm mind
- The opportunity to disconnect from tech and reconnect with yourself
Questions and Answers About Bathing for Self Care
Q: How will I feel during and after the bath?
A: If the water is hot enough for you to sweat, you will feel a heating sensation and begin to feel lighter as you sweat. Make sure to hydrate throughout the experience. You will feel relaxed and may also feel tired. The process of cleansing continues even after you step out of the bath. This is why the Sweat and Rest period is so important.
Q: What is the Sweat and Rest period?
A: While you may usually dry off and get dressed right after bathing, we encourage you to don a soft and comfortable robe or hop under a blanket to rest. This will allow the cleansing process to continue as you perspire. It also feels amazingly relaxing and is the perfect time to meditate or take a nap.
Q: When is the best time to bathe?
A: In the evening, on an empty stomach. Ideally, two hours before bed and at least 30 minutes after eating.
Q: How often should I use a Pursoma soak?
A: Our salt baths -- Minerals de Mer, Bain De Pied, and Apres Savasana -- can be used daily. Our clay baths – Digital Detox, Hot Tub, and Resurrection – are best used twice weekly.
Q: How should I prepare for a Pursoma soak?
A: To get the most from your soak, start by using the Pursoma Body Brush to prepare and exfoliate the skin. At tub-side, we recommend having one liter of water, body oil, a big towel, and bathrobe. Draw a hot bath and set a timer for 20 to 30 minutes.
Dissolve ingredients into the hot bath water, step in, and soak for at least 20 mins. Remember to keep hydrating. When it’s time to get out of the tub, wrap up your body and lay down to start your Sweat and Rest.
Q: Are there side effects?
A: This can vary amongst users. Some people sweat more, some lose water weight and feel lighter, some feel very relaxed. But almost all experience the side effect of deep, restful, peaceful sleep, waking up feeling recharged and rejuvenated.
Q: Is it ok to soak while pregnant?
A: Please consult your physician before using any Pursoma products while pregnant. However, we recommend Minerals de Mer if you are pregnant and do not make your water too hot.
Q: Which soaks are safe for nursing mothers?
A: All are safe. If you are feeling sensitive, we recommend sticking to Minerals de Mer and not having water too hot.
How to Create a Purifying Bath Self Care Ritual
This is a time for you. A time to step back from your busy life, worry, concern over illness or overwhelm, and tune into you.
Step 1. Disconnect: That’s right. Silence or turn off your phone and laptop. Better yet, leave them in another room.
Step 2. Hydrate: Set a pitcher of filtered water near your bath and remember to hydrate throughout your entire bathing experience.
Step 3. Pour: Sprinkle the entire contents of your Pursoma soak of choice into hot bath water.
Step 4. Soak: Now for the fun part. Soak in your tub for 20 to 30 minutes for a serene sense of relaxation and relief.
Step 5. Sweat and Rest: Emerge from your bath and wrap yourself in a comfortable blanket or robe and allow your body to continue the cleansing process through perspiration.
Go on. Give a purifying bath a try. We promise it will be your favorite new wellness ritual.
